Bosra Full Day
The most interesting part of the city today is the famous Roman theatre built in the 2nd century AD. Every summer, it hosts Arab and international performers who entertain audiences during the Bosra Arts Festival against a majestic background of Roman columns and arches.
The city itself contains a great number of Roman ruins, a part of the Byzantine Bahira Church, as well as the al-Mabrak Mosque, which is said to have been erected on the site where the Prophet's camel stopped to rest. There is also the Omar Mosque, the only one of its type remaining from the early days of Islam, and it retains its 7th century primitive form. An important Muslim citadel, dating back to the Ayoubite and Mamluk period, still stands and one of its towers now houses a museum of Antiquities and Traditional Arts.
The Citadel of Bosra
The citadel is composed of three towers, the southern, the eastern and the western, which border the outer walls of the theatre. These towers are linked to all the entrances and exits of what was one of the most important theatres in the world. The citadel is surrounded by a trench for water used for military purposes. It is entered through a moving wooden bridge that leans on five arches.
The Theatre of Bosra
This building showcasing the splendour of construction and accuracy of art, still retains most of its parts and elements from the Roman age. The amphitheatre is sculpted of basaltic stone. The stage and all its branches are decorated with "mihrabs", and have large doors and a roofed portico in the common style of Roman theatres. The amphitheatre is surrounded by doors and upper windows, some of which are open today and others closed. It has a capacity to seat 15,000 people.
